While launching model rockets is a very safe activity, there's always the risk you'll get your heart broken.
On this June day, the weather started calm, but grew windier as it progressed. I launched one of my Estes kits - the Hi Flier XL - on a D12-5 motor. It's a big model, and so I was surprised how high it went this time. By the time the chute opened, I knew the rocket was lost - it sailed gently over the tree line, and was lost in the swamp. I couldn't even get near where it had gone to see if I could retrieve it - the terrain was just too rough.
So there is no way I'd fly one of my beautiful scale models after that. But that's just what this rocketeer did - he put his beautifully built Estes Saturn V Skylab model on the launch pad, and I think everyone was wondering what he was thinking. I decided to capture the flight on video - the only thing I shot that day.
