Launch of the Estes Pro Series Nike Smoke, a scale model sounding rocket.
This 3-inch diameter flying model rocket is a scale model of a NASA sounding rocket used during the 1960s to test wind sheer for the space program. It was an important tool used prior to the Apollo program flights.
This launch used an Estes F26-6 composite rocket motor (manufactured for Estes by AeroTech). I like these zippy, smoky motors. They're a lot of fun.
I love this rocket. It's so reliable. I like flying it on G40 motors, but Itry to keep my flights relatively low on this field.
The parachute has a delayed opening because I use a device called a Chute Release, made by Jolly Logic. This handy device is a real game changer for rocketeers. You can set the altitude at which you want your main chute to open, in 100 feet increments ranging from 100 to 1000 feet. I nearly always set mine to open at 300 feet.
Model rocketry is a great, safe, STEM hobby which is fun for kids and adults alike. For more information, you can check out the National Association of Rocketry website, at www.nar.org.
If you want more in depth information on model rocketry, read The Handbook of Model Rocketry, by G. Harry Stine and Bill Stine. Here's a link to get the book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3QXlICG (paid link). That's an affiliate link, so if you use it, I get a very small commission, but it doesn't cost you any extra. You can also check to see if your local library has it, or request it at a local bookstore.
